I can see I'm not one to post random remarks. However, there is no doubt that I will enjoy engaging with anyone who has questions or comments about any of my books. Let's start a conversation?
Time, what a concept, what a phenomenon. Time tick-chips away at everything, living or inanimate, moment by moment, pushing from behind or pulling from ahead. It can be secure or slippery, it stretches, contracts, and bends.
Strangely, time can be lost, and it would seem—quantum physics aside—that it is then lost forever. I can loan someone money or my car and it's possible that it will come back to me, but time? This moment has passed, and it's unlikely that it will ever come back to me. Yet we can “make” or “find” time, as if it's something we can control. Evidently, time can exist inside of us, and outside of us, too. What I find most fascinating is that time can simultaneously be quicksilver and a solid obstruction. It skitters out of my hands and becomes a brick wall in front of this blog. This hasn't changed my determination to continue... I'll be back, in good time! Those who are close to me might remember my 2012 idea for the Incidental Jazz Café... I've decided to send the idea, along with the Business Plan, to a restaurant corporation! Fingers crossed, wouldn't it be sensational to have that fabulous wining & dining option?
Wine, cheese, bread, fruit, chocolates, and a background of fine jazz music, yum. After franchising there would also be an Incidental Rock Café, Incidental Rap, Pop, Country, depending on the demographics of each location. It's too much for me to launch the idea, but I sure would be a regular customer if it existed! I address you that way because you are taking the time to read this blog – thank you.
Blog. Blogging. Some words start sounding weird if you repeat them over and over, and other words only need to be said once. In any case, I have decided to write a... blog (it's sounding stranger by the minute). Here I am a writer, after all, and a philosopher with a head-full of thought, I'm not sure why I didn't embrace blogging a long time ago. I guess I'm one of those writers who likes the idea of time for revisions, edits, and just letting the words marinate for a while before sharing with the world. Blogging (there's that word again) is so immediate. Well, perhaps it can help me to keep up with the deliciously relentless philosophizing that goes on in my mind. The point of my blogging is different than my personal motivations, which are as follows: 1) I'm a philosopher who uses fiction as a vehicle, and I hope blogging about my philosophy (Millennial Infinitism) will stir the curiosity of bookish readers. (What kind of term is “bookish readers”? I wouldn't want to end up drawing more critics than fans! Maybe I should let all of this marinate for a while before posting...) 2) Another motivation is although I feel that I use only as many words as are necessary, brevity remains the soul of wit. It's my hope that blogging—and possibly even tweeting someday—will streamline my delivery of some pretty complex ideas. 3) The last is when it comes to philosophy, I love the idea of a dialogue rather than a monologue. (Has anybody ever found themselves associating the words “monologue” and “monotonous”?) I'd love responses to these posts. Motivations aside, my point here is to explore various angles of my philosophy. As I said, I call it Millennial Infinitism, or MI. I've been developing the philosophy for decades, and it was just “Infinitism” until I learned there's already a (pedantic, epistemological) philosophy with that name. Mine is much broader, covering everything from metaphysics to ethics, from aesthetics to logic, and more. (Speaking of logic, doesn't it seem that something called “Infinitism” would struggle against the bounds of referring to a single branch of philosophy?) I'm hoping to titillate the minds of people who think philosophy is boring. I firmly believe that learning and expanding the mind should be pleasurable. I want to speak to people as I would to friends about being on the magical sleigh ride of philosophy – it can move so fast that time slows down. It's treacherous (you'll see) but also filled with moments where you put your fingertips to your head and then explode them out in slow-motion: “Whoa.” Back to the point (of this bl-word), the focus may be philosophical but I don't think I'll be able to resist writing about more earthy subjects, like food & wine (I'm a foodie and oenophile), music (I'm a musician), books (bibliophile) and... okay you probably get the point.
